Subsurface Science and Technology
Subsurface science and technology enabling regional, national and international cleanup efforts. Conducting research needed to support cost-effective and technically defensible cleanup decisions. This capability focuses on developing and applying the basic understanding of biogeochemical reactions, energy, and mass transfer to the prediction, assessment, mitigation, and design and operation of in situ environmental processes.
ESSD has domain expertise in molecular-to-field-scale bio-geochemistry and reactive and multiphase transport modeling; lab-to-field-scale geohydrology, surface-water hydrology, and multi-phase flow modeling; ecological assessment, management, and monitoring; human health and environmental risk assessment; and environmental systems technology development and deployment.
